January Report

Recently I attended CFES Congress 2010. For those of you who don’t know who or what the CFES is, it is the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students. More information can be found from their President-Elect, our very own Rob Stalker. Congress is a chance for engineering students from across the country to exchange ideas, discuss the future of engineering, learn and teach others, make some friends, and have a generally good time. At Congress Carleton was asked to do a talk on diversity in the C-Eng community, and to talk about ways to increase diversity in engineering. Our talk touched on Q, WISE, IEEE-WIE, and International Students. Our attempt to pro-actively increase diversity, and the different ideas we presented were well received by other CFES delegates. An example of one of these initiatives is our diversity funds specifically earmarked to help these different groups of people increase their presence in C-Eng.

Currently I am working with our President on revamping the Election Procedure in order to present it at the Winter GM. After the record number of candidates, complaints, and voters, holes in our current Electoral Policy have been shown. The new policy should be a good step to rectifying the situation.

Another current project is fixing constitutional problems that the current CSES Constitution contains. A constitutional change will be presented at the Winter GM by me and our President.

Those of you who are awaiting your Engineering Jackets, we have news. Jackets are due to ship on the 22nd, and arrive at the CSES office on the 25th.

Graduates, be on the lookout for Pewter Mug forms. As soon as possible the order form will be available. As in years past, a deposit for the mug will be required. Deposit is returned upon picking up your mug. If you do not pick up the mug, the deposit becomes forfeit. We will be trying to get these mugs ready for graduates in time for Reflections, and those who are not attending Reflections should be able to pick your mug up soon afterwards.

Fall GM Update

Hey Ceng,

Update from what happened at the Fall GM:

Executives and Council are fulfilling their mandates. Only thing that isn't being done is blogs, but that is due to not having access. Access to blogs had not yet been passed on by previous exec. Blogs are now accessible, and will be updated as per mandates.

As stated at the GM I believe I am currently fulfilling all constitutional and policy mandates. Main things since September have been overseeing mailing lists, the announce list, first year elections, and the First Year Conference. First Year Conference had some issues that could have been done better. Solutions are being looked at in order for next years First Year Conference to run much better.

Look in the future for more frequent blog posts.

Welcome to a New Council Year

Hey C-Eng,

I'm Chris Fournier, the new Vice President Internal of the Carleton Student Engineering Society (CSES). My job is to co-ordinate the inner-workings of CSES committees, do many of the corporate things, organize meetings of Council, the Executive, and Meetings of the Members. I also run the pancake breakfast during EngFrosh, handle Pewter Mugs and Awards at reflections, the Ring Day ceremony, and more. I also manage the Society's mailing lists, websites, blogs, internal filing systems, and the constituting documents of the Corporation.

Although I may not perform tasks that are as important to students as VP Services (Leo's), VP Social (All the cool events) and VP Academic (Course feedback), I'm extremely knowledgable about the inner-workings of CSES, and if you want to know more or you want to get involved in any way you can, don't hesitate to contact me and ask me questions, I will respond! Also, if you have a question and don't know who to send it to, I can direct you to who can.

Check out http://getinvolved.engsoc.org/ to apply for a directorship, and if none of those positions sound like a good fit, just give me a list of the things you want to do to help CSES, or skills you can offer, and we'll create a position or directorship for you to help us out. There are also some upcoming important legislative positions on some new committees being formed that will be created during the summer, and will be filled by the CSES members at the Fall General Meeting.

On that note, the Internal portfolio would like to welcome the following new Directors:
  • Technical Director - Denis Zgonjanin
  • Postering Director - Jessica Lynch
  • First Year Conference Director - Laura-Lynn Elliott
  • Internal Clerk - Jennifer Kasun
  • Nuclear Powered Snowman Advisor - Mark Strummer
Another announcement I'd like to make is that last Society year we did something a bit different, to decrease duplication of services and to increase co-operation between CSES and the stream societies, we gave 4 stream societies (CMAS, IEEE, SCESoc and CSCE), one representing each academic department of the engineering faculty, a seat on council that they are allowed to appoint. We have gotten representatives from IEEE and SCESoc, but not CMAS or CSCE yet, so if you're a member of either society, bug their executive to nominate someone, or you, to sit on the CSES Council.

If you have any questions, you can email me at internal [at] cses.carleton.ca.

I'll post answers to various questions and comments (without mentioning names) I receive here, so that everyone can benefit from my responses.

Have a good summer C-Eng,

Chris Fournier
